Bringing Together Church and Community Through Music

About the Competition

Increased interest in this competition from teachers and students has been growing since its inception three years ago. It has attracted both able students and those in the early stage of their musical development thereby giving the competition its unique status within the region’s musical calendar. The competition aims to:

Increase the confidence of musicians of all ages in their musical abilities and creativity,

Provide an opportunity to perform on their chosen instrument or voice in a public setting regardless of their current musical ability,

Encourage musicians to share the performance experience as they listen to and learn from each other’s performance.

Enable teachers to measure students’ progress in a non-threatening annual forum.

The competition has four categories 11 and under, 14 and under, 18 and under and an open class. The latter is designed for those over 18 and those who may be under 18 but are attending full-time specialist music school/college. Candidates are able to perform a piece of their own choice or two contrasting pieces on their preferred instrument or voice. The performance time allowed for each candidate is as follows:

11 and under - up to 3 minutes

14 and under – up to 5 minutes

18 and under and Open Class – up to 7 minutes

(Additional time will be allowed for tuning, where required)

Candidates will be awarded marks on their performance using the following criteria:

Technical Accuracy: Playing the notations as accurately as possible.

Musical Interpretation: How well they have coped with the dynamics, the intended mood and pace of the music.

Overall Musicianship: The impression given to an audience by the overall performance. Has the music come alive?

Competitors are required to provide their own accompanists.

The organisers have appointed independent judges for the completion. The heats will be judged by Mr Robin Tate (Associated Board Examiner) and Dr Alan Spedding (Former Organist and Choir Master Beverly Minster). They will be joined for the final by Mr Andrew Penny (Director Hull Philharmonic Orchestra). The judges’ decisions will be final. Verbal comments on each performance will be given at the end of each session.

All those taking part will be awarded either a gold, silver or bronze certificate. All candidates must take part in the heats. Finalists will be chosen from each category to participate in the Finalists’ Concert.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners as follows:

· 11 and under £100.00,

· 14 and under £150.00,

· 18 and under and open class £200.00.
