The Musical “Jail Break” – 11th and 13th November

This musical, with Music by Roger Jones and Lyrics by Alison Fuggle tells the story of St Paul and his companion Silas visit to Philippi. Here they meet and influential business lady by the name of Lydia who becomes their friend and provides hospitality. However, they soon find themselves in trouble with a group of people who were exploiting a young woman’s ability to tell fortunes and who were following after Paul and Silas. These apostles realised that this young woman ability was bound up in cultic practices and consequently they released her from this demonic power. As a result they were brought before the magistrates who cast them into prison but in the middle of the night there was an earthquake and they were set free from their chains.

What the Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu said about this musical when as Bishop of Birmingham took the part of the Narrator

This stunning musical retells the energising story in the Book of Acts of Paul’s visit to Macedonia. In the musical we see just how robust, unpredictable, exciting and unquenchable the Holy Spirit is as Paul and Silas minister in Macedonia. There they have a life-changing encounter with Lydia and a slave girl possessed by a spirit which leads the Roman authorities to attempt to curb the work of the Holy Spirit. Shackled, imprisoned and beaten, Paul and Silas continue to praise God and liberations comes.

Following Christ’s example, Paul and Silas, protect and bless their captors before leaving the city, having founded a new church. Once again we see the heart of the Gospels being revealed: good triumphs over evil, adversity brings the fruit of holiness.

As this musical is performed I know it will encourage all who hear it to join the great dance of life, with a song in their heart, drawing inspiration from the Holy Spirit, Paul and Silas and a great cloud of witnesses who lead us on our journey. For “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty”.
